Country groups at a glance
EU / EEA licence
Your licence is from the EU/EEA. Exchange typically does not require legalisation. Depending on your case the path may be registration, exchange, renewal or replacement.
OECD / CPLP path
Licences from this group are usually recognised by Portugal under certain conditions. An authenticity certificate from the issuing country may be requested.
Bilateral reciprocity path
Your country has a bilateral / reciprocity regime with Portugal. Deadlines and possible exam exemption depend on your residence date and IMT review.
China Mainland licence
Holders of a China Mainland driving licence may apply to exchange for a Portuguese licence. This usually requires the original Chinese licence, notarised or double-authenticated documents, your Portuguese residence, NIF, SNS health number, an electronic medical certificate and proof of tax address. The final decision is made by IMT.
Other country / manual review
Eligibility depends on your country, licence category and IMT review. Additional documents or a driving test may be required. A FastNIF team member will review your file manually.
