How to Get Your Portuguese Proof of Address (Tax Residence Certificate & Alternatives)
Your SNS (health number) application must show where you live in Portugal. The cleanest document is a tax-residence certificate from Finanças, but several everyday documents are also accepted. Here is exactly how to get each one.
What counts as proof of address
Any ONE of the following proves your Portuguese address — you do not need all of them:
- Tax residence certificate (Comprovativo de Domicílio Fiscal) — issued by Finanças
- A rental contract, ideally registered with Finanças
- A property deed (escritura) if you own your home
- A recent utility bill (water, electricity, internet) in your name — last 3 months
- A signed declaration from your landlord/host, plus a copy of their ID and a utility bill
Option A — Get the tax residence certificate online
This is the fastest route if your Portuguese address is already registered with Finanças:
- Go to portaldasfinancas.gov.pt and log in with your NIF and password (or Chave Móvel Digital).
- Open "Os Seus Dados" → "Domicílio Fiscal", or search for "Comprovativo de Domicílio Fiscal".
- Check that the address shown is your Portuguese home. If it still shows a foreign address, update it first under "Alterar Morada" — your fiscal representative may need to confirm the change.
- Generate the PDF and download it. That PDF is your tax residence certificate — upload it to us directly.
Option B — In person at Finanças
No online access? Walk into any Serviço de Finanças office with your passport and ask for the "comprovativo de domicílio fiscal". It is free and printed on the spot.
If your tax address is still abroad
If Finanças still has a foreign address for you and you cannot change it yet, just upload a proof of accommodation instead: a rental contract, a property deed, or a host declaration together with the host’s ID and a recent utility bill. Any of these is accepted for SNS.
Quick tips
- The address should match what you entered in your application.
- Accepted formats: PDF, JPG, or PNG.
- Utility bills should be from the last 3 months.
- Still unsure? Message us on WhatsApp and we will check your document before you submit.
